Balloons fly over Marrakech almost all year round, but the experience changes a lot with the season: snow on the Atlas in winter, mild mornings in spring, haze and early starts in summer. Here is how to choose your dates — and why the day of your trip matters as much as the month.

Spring and autumn: the sweet spot
From March to May and September to November, dawns are fresh but not cold, the light is soft and the air is usually clear. It is also high season: book a few days to a week ahead, and earlier for a private basket.
Winter: the Atlas under snow
December to February brings the most spectacular views: the High Atlas, snow-capped, stands out sharply against the blue sky as the sun rises. The trade-off: temperatures near freezing at dawn and more frequent postponements due to wind, rain or fog. Dress warmly (see what to wear) and keep spare mornings in your schedule. Christmas and New Year are busy and more expensive.

Summer: early starts and heat
In June, July and August, pickups can be as early as 4:30 am, and heat haze often softens the view of the mountains. Flights still run on most days, but some operators reduce their schedule in the hottest weeks of late July and August. The upside: fewer crowds than in spring and often lower prices — see our price guide.
Atlas Mountains balloon rides from Marrakech
Many travellers search for an « Atlas Mountains hot air balloon ride »: in practice, balloons do not fly over the High Atlas itself. They fly over the plain at the foot of the mountains, which gives you the panorama of the range on the horizon. GetYourGuide groups these flights under Atlas Mountains balloon tours; most leave from Marrakech with hotel pickup.
Is there a Marrakech hot air balloon festival?
There is no major annual balloon festival in Marrakech comparable to those in Albuquerque or Bristol. The « festival » feeling comes every morning in high season, when dozens of balloons take off at the same time over the plain.
Our tips for choosing the date
- Fly on your first or second morning so you can reschedule if the weather cancels the flight.
- Avoid the morning of your departure flight: a postponement or a late return could make you miss your plane.
- Check the Ramadan dates: clocks switch to UTC+0, so pickup times change by an hour — and the city has a different rhythm.
