Marrakech Travel Guide: Plan Your Trip Around a Hot Air Balloon Flight

A balloon flight is often the highlight of a stay in Marrakech, but it shapes the rest of the trip: a 5 am pickup, a free afternoon, a spare morning in case of wind. Here is a practical guide to organise your holiday in Marrakech around it.

Where is Marrakech?

Marrakech lies in the centre-west of Morocco, on the Haouz plain, about 240 km south of Casablanca, 3 hours by road from Essaouira on the Atlantic and around an hour from the first valleys of the High Atlas. It is this location — a vast flat plain facing a mountain range over 4,000 m high — that makes it ideal for ballooning.

Getting there: flights and Marrakech airport

  • Airport: Marrakech-Menara (RAK), about 6 km from the medina, 15–20 minutes by taxi or airport bus.
  • Flight times: about 3–3.5 h from Paris, London, Brussels or Amsterdam, around 4 h from Germany or Poland, about 2 h from Madrid or Lisbon.
  • Departures: for « Marrakech airport departures », check the airport’s official board or your airline app on the day — and never book your balloon on the morning of your flight home.
  • Transfer: agree the taxi fare before getting in, or book a transfer through your riad.

What time is it in Marrakech?

Morocco uses UTC+1 for most of the year and switches to UTC+0 during Ramadan. In practice, Marrakech is usually on the same time as London in summer and one hour behind Paris in summer, the same as Paris in winter… except during Ramadan. Check the current local time on your phone once you land — balloon pickup times are always given in local time.

Where to stay for an early balloon pickup

Area Why stay there Pickup
Medina (riads) Atmosphere, rooftops, walking distance to the souks Often at a nearby square or gate if the riad is in a narrow alley
Hivernage Modern hotels, quiet, close to the medina Directly at the hotel
Guéliz Restaurants, cafés, shops Directly at the hotel
Palmeraie Resorts with pools and gardens At the hotel, often shorter drive to launch sites

Iconic addresses like the El Fenn riad-hotel, near Jemaa el-Fnaa, or the large Palmeraie resorts are all served by balloon pickups. If your riad is deep in the medina, the driver will meet you at the nearest accessible point — the operator will tell you where.
