Every morning, a few dozen balloons rise over the plain north and east of Marrakech while the city is still asleep. A hot air balloon ride in Marrakech is now one of the most booked experiences in Morocco β and one of the easiest to get wrong if you pick the first offer a hotel concierge or a street seller hands you. This guide explains how a flight really works, what is included, what it costs and how to choose.

How a hot air balloon flight in Marrakech works
Whatever the company, the morning follows the same rhythm:
- Pickup (4:30β7:00 am): a minibus or 4×4 collects you from your hotel or riad (or the nearest square if your riad is deep in the medina). Exact time depends on the season, as flights are timed around sunrise.
- Drive to the launch site (30β60 min): balloons take off in open countryside outside the city β never from the medina itself.
- Inflation & briefing: you watch the crew unroll and inflate the envelopes with fans, then burners, while you drink mint tea or coffee. The pilot gives a safety briefing, including the landing position.
- The flight (40β60 min): the balloon drifts with the wind. Depending on conditions, the pilot climbs to several hundred metres β sometimes close to 1,000 m β or skims low over fields and villages.
- Landing & breakfast: the chase vehicles meet you wherever you land. You are driven to a tent or a farmhouse for a traditional breakfast: msemen pancakes, bread, olive oil, amlou, honey, eggs, fresh orange juice and mint tea. Most companies hand out a flight certificate.
- Back in Marrakech (10:00β11:00 am): some packages add a short camel ride before driving you back.

Where do balloons take off and what will you see?
Launch sites are spread across the Haouz plain around Marrakech, mostly to the north and east of the city towards the Jbilet hills and the countryside beyond the Palmeraie, and some flights operate over the stony Agafay desert to the south-west. The pilot chooses the site each morning according to the wind, so you will rarely know the exact spot in advance.
What you see depends on the direction and the season:
- The High Atlas: on clear mornings the whole range stands out on the horizon β snow-capped from roughly December to March.
- Berber villages and kasbahs built of red earth, with their walled gardens and wells.
- Palm groves, olive orchards and fields drawing a patchwork below the basket.
- Other balloons rising around you at sunrise β the photo everyone wants.
- Marrakech itself is usually seen from a distance: air traffic around Marrakech-Menara airport keeps balloons away from the city centre.

Is a balloon ride in Marrakech worth it?
- β Pros
- Unforgettable sunrise over the Atlas and the Haouz plain
- Cheaper than most big balloon destinations
- Everything included: pickup, flight, breakfast
- Accessible to most people, no physical effort
- β Cons
- Very early start (around 5 am)
- The city itself is seen from afar
- Weather cancellations are possible, especially in winter
- Shared baskets can be crowded with low-cost operators
For most visitors, the answer is yes β as long as you book with a licensed operator, schedule the flight early in your stay (to leave room for a weather postponement) and keep realistic expectations: it is a countryside and mountain experience, not a flight over the souks.
How to book the right flight
- Book online, not on the street. Sellers around Jemaa el-Fnaa may offer low prices but you cannot check the operator’s licence or insurance.
- Check what is included: transfer from your area of town, breakfast, certificate, camel ride, photos or drone video.
- Read recent reviews and look at what people say about punctuality, the pilot and the breakfast. Our guide to the best balloon companies explains what to look for.
- Read the cancellation policy: most offers on GetYourGuide can be cancelled for free up to 24 hours before, and weather cancellations are normally refunded or rescheduled.
- Tell the operator about any back problem, pregnancy or reduced mobility β see our safety guide.
